Andrew Powe is a multidisciplinary artist and former Malaspina resident scholar, and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) degree from the University of British Columbia. During his time at Malaspina in 2012, Powe used large-scale combinations of traditional and digital printmaking to explore the effects of the internet on visual culture and the changing ways society consumes and interacts with images. In his more recent works, he has become interested in the boundaries between painting and sculpture, the idea of "building a painting," and the relationship between building materials and abstraction. He draws from a diverse range of influences spanning the history of modern painting, including Tatlin, Pollock, Johns, Rauschenberg, and Warhol. More recently, the New York-based artist Katie Bell, who explores similar themes in her painting-installations, has also become an influence in Powe's own practice.
